The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is called a compression-ignition engine. This contrasts with engines using spark plug-ignition of the air-fuel mixture, such as a petrol engine or a gas engine.

डीज़ल ईंजन एक अंतर्दहन इंजन है जो बन्द स्थान में वायु को संपीडित करने से उत्पन्न ऊष्मा का उपयोग करके ईंधन में ज्वलन (इग्नीशन) उत्पन्न करता है। इस प्रकार यह यह स्पार्क-ज्वलन इंजनों से भिन्न है क्योंकि उनमें वायु और ईंधन के मिश्रण को प्रज्वलित करने के लिए स्पार्क-प्लग का उपयोग किया जाता है। इसे संपीडन-ज्वलन इंजन भी कहते हैं। इससे प्राप्त यांत्रिक ऊर्जा का उपयोग वाहन, जेनरेटर तथा अन्य कई कार्यों में लाया जाता है। इसकी ख़ोज 1892 में पेरिस में जन्मे जर्मन मूल के अभियंता रूडोल्फ़ डीज़ल ने की थी। अन्य रसायनों के अलावा यह नाइट्रोजन तथा कालिख के कण दहन के उत्पाद के रूप में छोड़ता है जो प्रदूषण का ख़तरा उत्पन्न करते हैं।
